with all the concussion talk every NFL season i was curious to everyone's concussion history (if you can remember lol). Whether it was from sports or life accidents. What effects you still have today that you know are most likely or definitly from them
i have probably had 5-6 in my life and i'm 37 years old now. Still play contact sports (flag football which still generates contact to a degree)
-4-5 years old, skull fracture from falling on concrete
-14 years old, bashed head on concreate from fall
-16 years old, football blindsided on tackle
-19 years old, football hit
-29 years old, flag football knee to head
the last one that i remember getting was interesting because not only did i black out for a couple minutes, i continued to play the game. 5 weeks later in a game, i got hit in the head again (by forearm and not that hard) but it quickly dazed me and gave me a headache for the remainder of the day.
the effects i feel today that i am convinced are from these shots to the head are
-articles of memory loss. my long term memory is photographic but there are parts of it that have been totally "wiped clean" from my brain. things i did in my childhood that i once remembered i have no memory of presently
-simple recall. when i speak, i think what i want to say but can't speak the words like my mouth isn't ready so i sit on words alot. or i just can't recall the words at times i want to say.
-lightheadedness and eyesight focus. doesn't happen alot but does at times.
thankfully i don't get any blackouts, fainting, nausea, or headaches.
You will likely develop dementia early due to the head blows. Sorry to be harsh but that is what research shows. You should not play again ever as each blow compounds the damage.
so everyone who has gotten in situations in their lives where there is head trama or concussions with ultimately have dementia?
No....dementia is not destiny if you sustain head trauma. But almost always...an insult to the CNS will take a its toll on your executive function and diminish mental capacity. Enough insults to the CNS and the brain damage will be obvious and eventually effect your life.
When I was a young child a distant relative was spinning me around by holding one lag and one arm. She lost her balance and let go of me and I hit a cement porch. It knocked me out cold and I remained that way for DAYS! My father was very cheap and didn't want to spend the money to take me to the doctor or hospital. I had to have had a pretty bad head injury to be out for days.
Another time when I was fairly young my dad took us all to watch him play baseball. I was sitting in the bleachers and someone hit the ball and it got me right in the head. Next thing I knew I was waking up in the back of someones car.
Then in my early thirties I was with a friend and her two children and it was late at night and we were driving down this remote dirt road to go to her brother's place. She lost control in the mud and we went down a hill and hit a tree. I was wearing a seat belt but my head hit the dashboard. I remember knowing something was wrong with my head. My friend left me with her kids while she walked to try to find help at a lumber mill we were close to. They came and pulled the car out and from that point until a couple of hours from that I remember nothing, even though I was apparently doing things and acting normal. Well ever since that accident I have these brief spells where it is as if the whole world is spinning and my vision is a blurr. It lasts about 15-30 seconds, but they still scare me. I only have it happen a few times a year now, but it was a lot more often for a couple of years right after the accident.
