Does anyone have any first hand knowledge of microwave ovens making someone sick. I have heard rumors of people that ate a lot of tv/frozen dinners getting diseases but am wondering if it is the food product itself, the effect of microwaving the product; combination of product and microwaving creating harmful byproducts.
So does anybody know someone they may suspect of getting ill in some way from habitually using a microwave oven to heat their food? Or do you think it devalues the food leading to health problems because the food is nutritionally deficient in itself after microwaving?
Does the microwave cause the problem or is the possible problem the effect of a lifestyle that uses a microwave?
I agree, I don't think it's microwaving, I think it's the packaging. The plastic lining of food containers contains BPA, a known endocrine disruptor. I think the heat from the food causes the BPA and other plastic residues to seep into the food.
It's probably not an issue for someone who eats the occasional prepackaged meal (like a tv dinner) but if that was your lifestyle, like bringing it to work everyday for lunch along with a plastic bottle of water and then heating up a can of soup for dinner (where the soup is in a can lined with BPA containing material) and having another bottled water with it - yes, I think you could inadvertently be making yourself sick.
I have slowly purged most of my plastic food storage containers in favor of glass ones. It's healthier plus leftovers are now clearly visible in the refrigerator and more easily reheated because you don't have to transfer them to a microwave safe container. They are getting eaten, where before I was finding mysterious plastic containers shoved to the back of the fridge with unidentifiable food items in them and throwing things away.
Read the ingredients and nutrition information on your prepackaged microwave food. That is what you are getting, whether you microwave it or not.
Personally, I've never owned one and refuse to have one in my house. Even though it takes twice as long (one minute longer) to bring a cup of water to boiling in a saucepan on the stove top.
I have no first hand knowledge of microwave cooking/heating harming one's health. However, there have been numerous articles about how their use changes/reduces the nutrient value of the food cooked/heated in them.
If the nutrients are greatly reduced, and microwaves are used for most meals, one would think this could rob the body of nutrients (vitamins/minerals) needed for health.
And some of the packaging of microwave-ready-foods can supposedly turn into a toxic mix when subjected to microwaving...
