I am a 40 y.o male with a history of hip issues. At age 13, I had pins placed in my hips to treat a childhood hip disorder ( SCFE), and while the surgery was successful, I continued to have residual hip problems: stiffness, mobility issues, intermittent pain.
I managed to lead a very active life and was able to do pretty much anything I wanted to do physically in spite of the residual issues and pain.
At my last orthodox exam, the x-ray showed advanced osteoarthritis in my right hip, which was not a surprise. And I know I will need a right hip replacement more than likely before age 50.
Knowing that a hip replacement is in my future, I worry and stress about how long my hip will last before it needs replacing. As of now, I am still very functional: I can run if I choose to, I can cycle and hike, and I can lift weights and do cardio at the gym with the best of 'em!
But I still worry because I know things are eventually going to go south.
Has anyone here had total hip replacement surgery, and if so, how long were you effectively able to manage your hip issues ( pain, mobility) before opting for surgery?
As of now, I am not bone-on-bone yet; my right hip still has some cartilage left; it's just severely narrowed in areas.
Note: I am not a candidate for hip resurfacing due to the shape of the femoral head. But when the time comes, I am considering having the Delta Motion COC implant system, which is popular in India and England but is not yet approved here.
