I was talking to this girl I had just met. Every 5 minutes/ when she would get really excited? she should like break down in a stutter. she would tap her fingers to hand, try to repeat what she want to say (she sounded like a broken record), until she was able to talk normally again. It was a bit awkward, but I just smiled or pretended I didn't notice (is that what I should have done?). What disease would cause this?

she was in decent physical shape, so I don't think it was a physical disorder.

Could be a stress/anxiety reaction. I think it's best to let someone who stutters complete their sentences without prompting, just listen, as you did.

I know little about stuttering, but I'll tell you the story of my uncle who stuttered.

As a young boy (in the 1910's) he fell from a fire escape. Of course, they had no MRI's or anything like that at the time.

My uncle was very intelligent, did well in business, married, had children, had lots of friends, and lived to a very, very old age. But, he stuttered the rest of his life after that fall.

Just be patient with your friend. Imagine how frustrating it must be for the person doing the stuttering.

If your friend is like most people who stutter, her stuttering is variable, meaning she stutters in some situations and others not at all. I went through stuttering as a kid, so I know the frustration behind it.
