Face-blindness, or, Prosopagnosia.

So prevalent it was even the subject of a
60 Minutes segment:

My question: Is someone still face-blind if they
can recognize family members, but have trouble
telling co-workers, anyone from the outside world,
or movie stars apart?

I feel I have a mild form of this. If I know someone well and have seen them enough times, I'm fine. If I have met you only once or twice I probably won't remember your face.

Also, I finally realized THIS is why I have a hard time following movies where there are like 4-5 main characters who are all 20 something white males, with no distinguishing characteristics like glasses or beards.

True prosopagnosia means you can't recognize any face, ever. You can recognize a voice, a gait, a smell but that's it.

I'm the same way.

DH can is perplexed that I can rarely tell the actor from one character to the next on TV shows. In person I'm JUST as bad, especially if I run into a person in an unusual local..... I might see and say high to a cashier over time, but if I see her at say the gas station.... I know I know the face I just can't place with where.

Oddly, I am getting better at it the older I get...

I'm like this.

I remember one time I was invited over to the house of a fairly new friend whom I had known and done things with, like going for walks, out to lunch, to movies, art fairs, etc. at least once a week for about six months. She had told me that she was going to have a few friends over and that when I got there, I should just walk on in. I walked in and saw her sitting at her kitchen counter. I went right over and started in talking. She looked at me kind of strangely but replied to what I was saying. After a few minutes, my actual friend entered the room and said to me, "Oh, hi, I did't hear you come in. I see you two have met." I was chagrined to realize that for the past few minutes, I had been talking to a total stranger who I thought was my friend. When they were next to each other, I could tell that they didn't even look that much alike.

I also have terrible time with white male actors with brown or dark hair. I remember once I was watching "The Departed," and I couldn't figure out why the main character sometimes had facial hair and sometimes was clean shaven. After watching maybe half of it, I decided they were going back and forward in time. I said this to my friend, and she said, very patiently, "They aren't going backwards and forward in time, they are two different actors."

One time I was waiting in the airport for my sister to arrive. When she came out of the gate, I did know instantly it was her, but prior to her getting there, I also thought two or three other women might be her. And she has been my sister for all of my 64 years on this planet.

I always believe there are degrees to any ailment, likewise face-blindness. In my case, wife and family(those closest to me) are always recognizable, but if a co-worker or customer at my job changes hairstyle, wears glasses one day and not the next, or a hat one day and not the next, it can throw me off temporarily. No problem recognizing the boss, however.

When we have acquaintances(friends we see barely once per year) over for holidays, I'll always introduce myself to them, and they ask me "Remember me? I was here last Christmas Eve", or my wife will elbow me, "That's Jane! She's been here three times!" (in the last two years as opposed to friends who drop in twice per month).

Plus I'm a hoot to go to a movie with, or watch one on TV with! If enough characters/actors bear enough resemblance(in my estimation anyway!), I'll start having difficulty following the story line and start asking: "Is that the bank robber?", or "Is that so n so's uncle"? Again, the wife will whisper "NO! Those two are night and day!" smh!...

It quite often happens to me, that if I see a person only once, I cannot recognize them a few minutes later. Like, if I am in Walmart, and I ask for assistance, a few minutes later I cannot recognize the associate that I had just talked to. But with additional exposure over a period of time, I learn to recognize people I see repeatedly.

But I often recognize people if I notice something they are wearing, I recognize their clothes before I recognize their face. Which is not helpful the next day.

It's a problem when you're dating, you meet a girl and arrange to meet again later, and you get there and have to depend on her recognizing you.

Your last paragraph made me laugh. My sister and I both have this, and sometimes when she has seen a new TV series before I have, I'll say, "How was it?" And she'll say, "All the men had brown hair," and I just sigh because I know I'll never be able to keep the plot line straight.
