Every so often I get this really strange feeling that is hard to accurately convey with words. It happens to me suddenly, I will quickly wake from sleep, the feeling is that I need to make myself move and/or breath or I will die/disappear, it lasts for a few seconds. I'm not gasping for air nor is my heart beating fast to where it causes me alarm. It's not like sleep paralysis, because I can move. It's as if I feel I need to jump start my body to get it to start functioning. I'm guessing this is some part of anxiety, but I have never experienced this before.

Does anyone else experience the same or have a name I can put to this?

Thank you

If I have sleep apnea I don't know it, but I'd bet this is what's happening with you--you stopped breathing for a few seconds and your body has to jar itself awake to get breathing again. Some people go like that all night and wake up exhausted and that's when they go get help.

It is strange though, because when I wake up I don't feel I am gasping for air, neither does my heart seem to rapidly beat. I need to take note of what position I am sleeping in when this happens, I thought I was lying on my side but I'm not 100% sure.

Classic sign of obstructive sleep apnea is dreaming you are falling or flying and jerking awake. I never had any racing heart or gasping. If a partner tells you you twitch a lot or snore a lot, it is OSA. There is a simple test your doc can order: you sleep with a finger probe taped to a finger, hooked up to a mini-computer. It measures your heart rate and oxygen levels as you sleep. You send it back to the company, the recording is read, and a report is sent to your doctor. If you do have OSA, a full sleep study is ordered: you go sleep in a sleep lab (very comfortable), fully wired to a computer.

I've had a similar experince. Not sure what it is either. I wake up in the middle of the night, with a strange feeling, kind of like I'm going to pass out I feel better when I sit up and move my legs & arms, but it takes a few minutes to come out of it, I thought maybe my blood pressure had dropped quickly. Like you, I can't really explain how I feel.

Hmm, I can't really recall my dreams prior to awakening in this situation. I'm pretty certain flying and/or falling are not one of them, I do recall one time that my dream was probably unpleasant, but wither or not it was what woke me up or had any correlation to my awakened state is unknown.

I ask my boyfriend and he says he hasn't ever noticed me snoring.

I am so sorry you experience this. It is so strange isn't it? I feel like I must move! I too do the same thing, I move my arms, I sit up, I look around and then prompty lay back down and go back to sleep.

I too have this feeling but I get it at any given time of the day. I have to get up and move around, get a drink of water, and cold air. Sometimes it lasts for a couple minutes other times a lot longer. I've never actually passed out but that's how it feels and a heaviness comes over me. I've had this for over a year and im scared because it's happening more often and Drs tell me there's nothing wrong. Have they diagnosed you yet?

Have you had a complete physical? Blood work, etc. Have the docs checked your heart or any other possibilities?

If the docs are certain that all is OK, than perhaps it's panic attacks. These are common & can be treated with therapy and/or medication. Discuss all this with your doctor.

I am amazed I have found other people who experience this also.
I have been having these experiences or and similar, on and off for quiet a few years now. However, I haven't had one for a few years, until two nights ago. I would call it a strong one, I woke from my sleep around midnight. (occurrs while sleeping day or night). No heart racing, nothing, I am fine in every other way. My vision/eyes do become slightly blurred or buzzy. and my skin numbish strange to touch, and is even a different texture. The episodes can last half an hour to an hour. It is like I am not here or I will disappear. By this time I am scared and pack a bag and have my phone on me and unlock my door, In case I need my neighbours help, or something happens. I get up, drink water, walk around, go to the Toilet. I will walk outside and do some deep breathing. I go back to bed finally, half an hour later, and see if I am able to lay down. I have learnt it is best to prop myself up on two or three pillows and lay on my back. If I have gone back to bed to early it has reoccurred straight away.
I am Starting to recognise, something IS going on just before I wake up.
I am trying to work out what that may be. This is hard because it is like you may be dreaming or and a little disorientated. Before actually waking. I think back to what I ate To what I am doing and feeling prior that event. So far There is no name. Anxiety is a word that is thrown at me also, but it doesn't seem to fit. What about if I say it's like Im not in my body?
