Yes, I had it in every joint of one foot for 3 months back in 2010. I have a high tolerance for pain but it was truly agony. I had to stay in bed 24/7 and my adult daughter had to take my dog in, as I couldnt even feed her during those 3 months. The medication would just take the edge off by mid-evening but it always came back again with a vengeance in the middle of the night. I even asked an ER doc to please cut the foot off -- and I was dead serious.
Gout doesnt usually last that long but, in my case, it was due to acute (temporary) kidney failure.
I read that the 3 most painful conditions are kidney stones, gout and childbirth (supposedly in that order).
My DH had his first bout of gout when he was in his twenty`s. Both his father and grandfather had it also. There were times my hubby would be on crutches. It was so painful, he could not even tolerate a sheet on him in bed. He now takes a pill every day.
I had my first attack in October, but was not diagnosed. The surgeon confirmed it during bunion surgery, when he could see the granules in the joint. Now, 7 weeks post surgery, the gout flared up again. I was prescribed prednisone and colchicine. It seems to be clearing up.
There is a preventative medication, but I would not want to take it unless the gout became unmanageable.
Incidentally, I thought the instructions for colchicine were interesting. My doctor said, “ I used to tell patients to take two pills, then one an hour later, and keep doing that until you get diarrhea. Now, I just prescribe the 3 pills, and that seems to be enough.”

My husband had his first (and with any luck, only) attack of gout a couple years ago. He had had high serum uric acid levels, so when his big toe joint swelled and became horrifically painful, they figured this was gout.
We looked up and used home remedies (ie, ice, rest, anti-inflammatory OTC meds like ibupropen, Aleve or whatever we had on hand, and my husband called his PCP to ask about it. The doc told him he was doing the right things to help it (he figured it was gout), and they'd see him and prescribe prescription meds if it didn't improve or if it did and came back. The doc explained (and I also read somewhere), that drugs such as colchicine are used for recurrent flareups of gout, but that rest, ice and anti-inflammatories often relieve first time gout attacks. The doc also suggested that hubby cut back on his red meat and avoid organ meat (like liver) and other sources high in the purines and prymidines (amino acids that break down into uric acid)
Well, my husband's gout did get better, and he started looking up other home remedies, or preventatives. He found recommendations for tart cherry supplements, so he started taking tart cherry juice, and tart cherry/tumeric capsules, and has taken these for several years now. FWIW, he hasn't had another gout attack. Maybe he was lucky, maybe it's a placebo effect, or maybe there is something in those capsules that really has worked for him.
After 2 serious attacks treated with indomethacin , and lots of "twinges", doc put me on allopurinol, 300mg daily. My uric acid blood test levels now stay under control.
Tart cherry juice did help with some twinges before I started the allopurinol.
"too much" red meat or alcohol did cause some twinges.
I had it one time, went to the doc, ended up educating the doc, and cured it with diet. Never had it again.
My wife used to suffer from gout, but she also cured it by watching her diet. She has not had a flare up in 15 years. And cherry juice does work (but buy the real stuff).
