I had a cortisone shot on tuesday in my hand for servere pain due to arthritis at the base of my thumb the tissue around the area is just wasting away. the shot hurt like hell and now 3 days later still very painful more so than it was before.the dr said it would take a few days for it to work and will be sore, but this is bad some times its so unbearable i have to take a Vicodin. is this normal?
Yep. I have tendonitis and the shot site hurt worse than it for several days. It will calm down - it took mine about 3 days. You will want to find an alternative therapy for the long term. Cortisone can really help, but it can also do a lot of damage especially with repeated injections over time. My doctor limirted me to 3 lifetime injections!
having severe electrical shock pains in fingers, dr. offered cortizone, but I am afraid of it. Had it in my thoracic area, wow, HURT. Thanks for the posts, they are exraying my hand today, NO on the cortizone for me, though use of my hand is getting more limited...
Updating this - I went to the Ortho. today as the osteo is getting much worse in the base of my thumb - I was hoping to find out if there was something I could do to relieve it - I did get another brace (much more comfortable although it goes from my hand to half-way to my elbow) - the old brace I'd gotten from there (that Dr. died) was a hard plastic thing that HURT. He prescribed Voltaren Gel (which I picked up today), said if that doesn't work it would be a cortizone injection which he stressed HURTS and BURNS - another option would be joint replacement surgery (involving wrist tendon removal, etc.). This is my right hand (of course I'm right-handed) - hoping this gel and brace work but wanted some feedback on those that have gone the other routes (I'm scared, live alone (recently widowed), trying to get things together because I have to sell the house and move somewhere....) - I've been trying left hand things (such as typing here and can manage w/finger pecking but can't do much else, let alone detail work, try to apply makeup, etc.). Applied for disability as I got this on top of Fibro. and CFS which made me leave my long-time job. Was Dr. pushing surgery and making the shot more scary or not?
I have had 3?4? Steroid injections in fingers due to painful trigger finger. Yes, it is very painful for a nano-second and then it was fine. It's been some years, maybe 7?, and I have had no more problems. I went to an orthopedic who ONLY worked on hands. I wouldn't let anyone else do it if possible.
Thanks, supposedly this guy is the hand specialist - didn't actually spend much time w/him. It scared me when he talked about how it would hurt and burn - I did have one injection in my middle finger (years ago) as it locks up because of the thumb stuff. Not sure why they couldn't pull up those records as it was at the same place. I told him that Dr. had said I'd feel a pinch but he hadn't told me it would burn and I instinctively pulled my hand away... - I guess this one in the deep thumb base might be worse? Honestly, he scared me.
I had both thumbs injected at the base by my arthritic doctor. He numbed the area, injected the cortisone, and I felt nothing. I watched him do it. When the numbness wore off a few hours later I had some discomfort but no pain. The cortisone effect lasted about 3-4 days and the arthritic pain reared it's ugly head. The doc said this could happen. I now vacillate between various pain killers trying for some relief.
