Dr Drew says this is a moderate flu season. So even when you combine influenza and covid-19, there have been far worse years. I’m not an expert. But people keep saying wait 2 weeks. But it’s been 2-4 months already and the numbers are not adding up yet. How much longer until we know? As it stands the total deaths are what count. Ebola was worse but far less had it.
Agree? In the end it’s total deaths, not how many had it and didn’t know. It’s total deaths. No other number is as relevant.
We’ve been hearing about this virus for a third of the year already and it’s still a moderate flu season. Number of deaths are facts. No other detail is relevant.
The number of flu cases and deaths is estimated, and it takes time to finalize those after the season ends. Adult influenza is not a reportable disease. Pediatric flu deaths are reported, and there have been 149 as of March 14.
COVID-19 deaths are being reported and counted. Cases are under counted due to lack of testing and the number of people who do not get seriously ill. At some point the scientists will do antibody testing and come up with an estimate of how many of the less severe COVID-19 infections there were.
This flu season is shaping up to be the second most severe in the last ten seasons, with 2017-2018 being worse.
The problem with COVID-19 is that its disease burden is coming in on top of the flu burden. Hospitals are used to flu (barring pandemics like in 2009). They do not have the additional resources to take care of the additional COVID-19 patients. Keep in mind that although the current flu season would naturally be expected to wind down now, if the efforts to mitigate COVID-19 are doing anything, they should mitigate flu also. That would make this flu season less severe than it might have been.
this statement contradicts your conclusion though, doesn't it? your premise is total deaths is the stat we should be concerned with but you write that far less had ebola yet somehow it was worse?

We do not yet know the final tallies of deaths for either flu or COVID-19, so there is no way to know that. COVID-19 clearly carries a higher risk of severe disease.
