I think there are two main situations where we meet new people - business settings and social gatherings. In the past the handshake worked in both settings but all that has changed now. Until we settle on how to greet new people (and that will take time) I think there will be a lot of outstretched hands waiting to be shaken but with few takers. I come from a background where hugging was the norm and I'll be happy to see the handshake between strangers disappear. I could never help wondering if the hand I was shaking had been washed. We've all seen people leave restrooms without going anywhere near the sinks.
None. A wave, elbow bump, or peace sign just doesn't have nearly the same effect, sorry. I dislike all of the alternate ideas and feel that the handshake is an appropriate greeting. If you're concerned about germs spreading, just bring extra hand sanitizer. There's no need to completely tear down an established way of making an immediate personal connection.
Well, I wasn't thinking of naked hip checking or butt bumping...
Neither was I... Yuck!
