Anyone else out there have experience with corticosteroid withdrawal or even going through it now? We can hold a pity party together!
Yesterday was the last day of my Prednilosone eye drops. What I started the course right after my retinal surgery, I thought: “Oh, no problem — they are just eye drops!” Well, ha ha ha! I later found out that eye drops have a greater systemic effect than steroids taken orally because they are not metabolized through the digestive system, but go straight into your blood — like an injection.
Anyway, now I can add nightmares to my list of withdrawal symptoms (cardiac arrhythmia — yes, I have medical support for this — fatigue, apathy, indigestion). Just had one of my worst and most vivid ever last night!
while they may not be absorbed orally systemic absorption is minimal at best via the ocular route.
also once they are in your blood they are metabolized the same as an oral dose. your oral does doesn't go straight from your stomach to the metabolic pathway, it's absorbed first the metabolized.
