I started drinking bottled alkaline water about two months ago (another brand), because it tastes very good. After this news report I checked to see how they make it, and found they use ionization to make it alkaline. I didn't know that and not if ionization water is a good idea or not now. I'm going back to plain spring water.
Have you checked into water from Icelandic glaciers ? It is naturally alkaline, available at Walgreens & vitamin type stores (and Stop & Shops in New England, at least). Tastes good and reasonably priced.
I started on it a few years ago because of LPR, aka Silent Reflux.
Our body especially the gut is very acidic. The blood is slightly acidic. Too much alkaline water can cause problems. So never buy those alkaline water and never take anti-acids. The stomach is supposed to be very acidic to properly digest food.

it's unclear from the article what caused the problem, alkalinity or something else, i.e. possible contaminant?
I find it hard to believe that alkalinity could be the problem. There isn't even an MCL(maximum contamination level) for alkalinity. This article does not distinguish between pH and alkalinity. They are not the same thing. pH measures the amount of hydrogen (acid ions) in the water. Alkalinity is a measure of the carbonate and bicarbonate levels in water. Cadmium can cause liver damage.
What is the purpose of alkaline-water...........your body is supposed to naturally control
its PH-levels?????
In my case, it helps control what's called Silent Reflux (or LPR). It counteracts the stomach acid pepsin by washing down the esophagus and larnyx. I only use the ones bottled in Iceland from glacial water.
Alkaline water has its benefits such as improve mineral bone density, which can help people with acid reflux disease. besides, it also has some other benefits like reducing high blood pressure risk, reducing blood lipid levels, lowering diabetes risk, and cancer protection.
Obviously it was a contaminant issue that would cause such damage.
There is also no evidence that drinking alkaline water has any benefits in improving mineral bone density, reducing BP risk, reducing lipid levels, lowering diabetes or cancer risk.
If you think it does then buy the most expensive water or water treatment system out there and maximize all the placebo you can get. If you come down with any of those conditions then obviously it wasn't enough alkaline water that you were drinking so double down.
