For the past two years I have been dealing with a horribly itchy scalp. It is so bad I am getting bald spots from scratching, and it has crept down onto my forehead and some patches on my hands. I have asked for help from my primary care doctor numerous times, who looks at it and says it's sebhorrhea, then prescribes a special shampoo. I have tried 4 different shampoos, several lotions and herbal remedies, but nothing has helped, in fact the prescription shampoo made it worse.

Finally, I got a referal to a dermatologist who informs me that it is not sebhorrhea, it's psoriasis. No wonder nothing worked! She prescribed me the appropriate shampoo and some creams. It's onlybeen a couple of days, so I don't know if they are working or not.

I am irked that I have suffered for two years with this stuff because my doctor misdiagnosed me. My husband defends him, saying he's not a dermatologist, but I think he should have been able to recognize a very common skin issue, or if he wasn't sure should have refered me to the dermatologist.

What do you all think: am I right to be miffed about this? Or is my husband right that as a GP he would not be able to diagnose this correctly?

I would have gone to a dermatologist first. I have eczema in my scalp and behind my ears and I went to a skin doctor who gave me a cream and a shampoo. Also I have found that pure 100% aloe Vera in the bottle is good on your skin and scalp. I use Amara Beauty Aloe Vera gel. I use it as a leave in conditioner on my hair. Works great. it's about 20.00 a bottle but it is worth it. It's good for dandruff too.

If the treatments my GP suggested didn't solve the problem, I would have asked for a dermatologist referral a lot sooner than 2 years! I would also make sure my GP was informed of the correct diagnosis.

Agree, I would not have given it more then 2 or so months.

The doctor should have referred to a dermatologist when nothing was working, but the OP should have also realized the GP wasn't going to help their issue.

To the OP, if the shampoo and stuff do not work, they have other things to try. I see people suffer on Dr pimple popper. She clears them right up.
