29 year old guy here who has been plagued with this problem since my early teens. I have very curly hair, which unfortunately causes facial hairs to become ingrown on my neck and creates an unsightly and uncomfortable rash. I've tried different razors, never going against the grain, certain creams like salicylic acid, shaving very carefully ,not shaving for a few days etc. I've even been to doctors and they can't tell me much..except laser hair removal which I can't afford. I've read online that I should lay off shaving for a month for the hairs to break through and heal...but I don't do well with facial hair and find it uncomfortable too. Any other men been through this? Any tips?
You've figured out the cause correctly. If you shave close, the curly hair tends to ingrow. Solutions include growing a beard or shaving with an electric razor that doesn't cut too close-- leave a "5 o'clock" shadow at all times...Remember Don Johnson on Miami Vice 40 yrs ago?
One of those side-burn clippers (kinda like a small barber's clippers) would be just right.

My understanding is that a close shave tends to be worse for the ingrowns- so a 6-blade razor would be worse than a single blade razor. I’d say the first option would be to try a single blade razor to see if that helps. Although I am female, I have found some razors are worse for me than others. For example, I’ve never been able to use the Venus razor. When I did use it, my legs looked like they had chicken pox. I have never had ingrowns with other razors. I am not sure what it is about that razor that gave me the ingrowns.
I'm going to try not shaving for a few weeks which is going be tough as hell because I like being clean shaven...and I can feel the irritation after a few days already. Gonna try an electric razor after too for the neck, the face isn't a problem.
