a lot of big name/popular brands very high in lead. see each brand results at link.

a couple of lawsuits already moving. kudos to consumer reports for this

https://www.consumerreports.org/heal...e-a8480295550/

CR tested a mix of brands, including smaller ones, such as Alter Eco and Mast, and more familiar ones, like Dove and Ghirardelli.

For 23 of the bars, eating just an ounce a day would put an adult over a level that public health authorities and CR’s experts say may be harmful for at least one of those heavy metals. Five of the bars were above those levels for both cadmium and lead.

wow! I can't believe that. I eat the Hershey's dark. Lindt and Ghirardelli brands. Not often but I do eat them.
All of the other brands on the list I have never heard of.

No worries, as that's deemed to be a safe dose.

"Just an ounce a day" is 23 pounds a year.

My father actually told me about this and ordered me some chocolates for my birthday that he said consumer reports rated as being some of the best for lacking lead and I got to tell you these are amazing some of the best chocolate I've ever had ... they have kind of a chalky or gritty feel when they melt in your mouth thats really enjoyable to me.

https://www.tazachocolate.com/

That said they're using half a microgram as a baseline level but there's a number of other foods that are considered health foods that exceed this level. Sweet potato, liver, spinach, nuts, with shrimp being at the very top of the list, along with Italian salad dressing for some reason.

https://www.purefoodcompany.com/wp-c...d_in_foods.png

Watermelon is on the list and eating 4 oz of watermelon is not difficult at all I can eat four or five times that in the single sitting.

Keep in mind this article is based on California levels which are quite conservative and there's probably a bit of sensationalism in this hyping over lead and cadmium levels.

https://thechocolatelife.com/lead-ca...ocolate-fears/

"The words lead, cadmium, and chocolate in the same sentence are a perfect storm for clickbait. Add kids into the mix and the topic is pretty much guaranteed to lead the 11 o’clock news because the optics are scary."

Is the un- leaded stuff cheaper than the leaded? Do you get better mileage out of the leaded chocolate?

Keep thngs oi perspetove-- CDC sets a level of over 3.5jgm'dl merely as an indication that the kid has higher Pb levels than most other kids. We don't actually know the toxic levels of chronic exposure, but levels as low as 30gm/dL can cause kidney failure. Treatment with chelating agents isn;t recommended until levles are 45gm/dL...

Let's say a blood level of 20gm/dL is safe---that means the total Pb in the blood is 1000 gm (It's really more complex than that because Pb is sequestered in bone, muscles, liver etc, so total body load is way higher than that. We'll ignore it to make it look more serious.)...

It looks like Hershey's is the worst with 135 ug (MICRO-grams) per bar.

1000 gm divided by 135 ug means you'd have to eat a billion Hersheys to build up your blood level enough to be concerned....Diabetes & rotted teeth will kill you way before the Pb will.

I think your source for treatment of elevated blood lead levels is off by several orders of magnitude. Forty five grams of lead per dL sounds like an astronomical amount.

CDC guideline is 45 micrograms per dL.

consumer reports still on it

https://www.consumerreports.org/heal...s-a6449371819/

Chocolate Makers Are Urged to Get Lead and Cadmium Out of Their Products

Consumer Reports delivered a petition with almost 55,000 signatures to the four companies with bars that CR tests found were high in those heavy metals. Only one responded.
