I have an appointment tomorrow to see about getting my tubes tied. Looking for input from anyone who has had this done and any problems you may have had. My kids are older, so it won't be done after a birth. Any advice would be appreciated!

I had it done eight years ago. The anesthetic made me throw up a lot afterwards, which pulled at the stitches, unfortunately. It took a little while to heal, at least a couple of weeks for me to feel somewhat normal again, although I had it done on a Thursday, and went back to work the following Monday because I can't stand being a slug at home.

I'd do it again; I love not having to worry about getting pregnant.

I had it done a couple of years ago when my youngest was 5 years old.

Mine was the laparoscopic version. It was done without complication or any significant pain (I was given low-dose meds for pain management). I think I remember being a bit sore for a day and was up and about in no time.

The only thing that I can attribute to having my tubes ties was getting a faster (1.5 day) and heavier period. I used to get a light flow for five days...but I'd rather it be hard and fast. LOL

The relief of not having to worry about pregnancy (though nothing is ever fail-safe) is a big plus. I tried ALL forms of birth control and had complications with just about every one. This one fixed it all.

Thanks for the information! I heard about periods being heavier....probably because you aren't on BC anymore! I'd rather shorter but heavier, too! Are the cramps and PMS worse?

Considering it's just a little over a day (for me) of having a period, the cramps are equal but shorter. I just take a day off and all is good.

Sure beats five days of misery like I had before.

Good luck with your appointment tomorrow!

I had my tubes tied the day after my 3rd child was born..no probs associated with the procedure. Since then though, I can tell when I ovulate. I have some pain for a day. I never experienced that before the tubal ligation. Also, my periods dont last very long. I have never taken birth control pills.

Thanks, ladies! You can read all the information out there, but hearing from someone who has had it done themselves means a lot!
One more question. Is it effective immediately or do you have to wait until after your next period?

Hmmm, I don't know..I never thought about that. How long does an egg hang out in the uterous? I forgot to mention that I insisted on seeing for myself the little segments of tube that were removed. The surgeon was kind enough to hold them up, each in their own tiny vial while I was still laying on the surgical table. Whew, what a relief!

Depending on the type of tubal ligation you opt to have, you may need to have backup birth control for up to three months. Read more here:
