It seems like just yesterday that the death toll was only 46 ..... but now we're up to 53. Another 4 in Mexico, one in Costa Rica, another one in Canada, and a third in the USA.

But it can't possibly get worse than 53 deaths ...... can it? We all know them virologists don't know nothin'.

Compared to the 36,000 deaths by the regular flu each year, I'd almost rather get the swine flu at 53.

36,000 deaths a year occur from regular flu, yet these aren't publicized. The media is going to publicize every death attributable to swine flu, regardless of whether any of the deceased had any underlying medical conditions, i.e. would most likely have died from regular flu (which of course, is extremely unfortunate).

Again, many folks are missing the entire point to this story. It's not the "53 versus 36,000 deaths" that matters. The fear is the structure of this never seen before type of virus. Scientists fear it might possibly host the ability to mutate to something much more deadly. REMEMBER of all other known pandemic strains of flu, they always started out mild and not highly lethal, then changed.

I will agree completely, that so far the virus has been whimpy compared to even an average flu. Let us all hope it stays that way. The only thing that will tell us, is time. If this virus is still simmering in the background come fall, it could get ugly.

Carolina Cowboy - you are absolutely right, noone not even the best scientists and doctors in the world knows where this is headed. ANY virus can mutate at any given time into something deadly and this virus is a bit different so it is scary. My issue is that everyone is jumping onto the bandwagon of either side in the hopes that they can come back with "I told you so".

We don't know what will happen so instead of freaking out about it and blaming the government or jumping onto conspiracy theories or instead of totally blowing it off, go somewhere in the middle. Recognize that there is a slight chance that it will be worse in the fall (isn't that how they try to determine which flu they will make vaccines for the next season anyway - by looking at the spring), do some preparations like have enough food in the house, and calm down!!!! There isn't going to be much we can do about it anyway.

And remember, even if it does mutate and get worse this fall, this is NOT 1918. We have an abundunce of CLEAN and treated water, we wash our hands much more than they did, we didn't throw sewage in the streets, we have antibiotics, and they very likely will have a vaccine for it six months from now.

Oh, this is the final tally, it's already over? Score ...... uh, was that 36,000 by actual count, or was that number based on modelling and simply repeated for the last 5 years in a row?

So you believe that it has ended for this year, the score is 36,000 to 53 ..... beginning of April to beginning of May ..... wow, short season! Thank God the virus has died out and won't kill any more people.

Also, did you happen to notice that the regular seasonal flu only kills very young children, the elderly, and the immune compromised ....... while the vast majority of the ones who died of swine flu have been healthy young adults with NO underlying medical conditions?

By the way, that's a common characteristic of every new pandemic flu that has struck since the Spanish Influenza ..... they've all struck mainly young, healthy adults.
