I am long past menstrual periods, but I found birth control pills to be a blessing. Some women may celebrate their flow, but there is no denying it can be messy --- and painful. As far as I am concerned, bring on the hormones. If you can cut the number of periods from 13 per year to 4 per year or stop them altogether, I am all for it.
The menstrual hut idea has its advantages, too --- if you can bring Advil, books, wine, and chocolate!
I'm looking forward to menapause, so I can stop bleeding like a stuck pig, feeling the pain of red-hot, serrated daggers slashing slowly through my uterus, the occasional blinding brain-splitting migraine, and the two hours of explosive diarrhea every month.
If what I described sounds like a privilege, a blessing, and something worth celebrating, you're welcome to it.
I am so happy that I had a hysterectomy! I was in perimenopause for 10 years and it was so painful and I could bleed for 2 weeks, have 3 days off and then start up again for another 2-3 weeks.
I had already had my children and my GYN finally decided that the cysts were large enough to remove everything (the largest cyst was 27cm!). The surgery was long and complicated since the cysts had attached themselves to other organs and had to be scraped off.
I started my cycles when I was 9 and was 45 when I was finally rescued from this 'gift'.
I was lucky, I didn't start til I was 14 and had my hysterectory at 25. The reason for the hysterectory was't lucky but it turned out ok. I had cancer. We had a little girl and had 2 preemies that died, so though it probably was better I had the surgery it was hard to accept I could have no more children. We did solve the problem: we adopted 2.
What I find worse than the actual mess is that my menstrual blood has a really strong foul offensive odor that makes me feel ugly and hate myself. Why does it have to stink so damned much?! Yes, even right after bathing! *gag!*

See a gynecologist and ask to be tested for a condition called bacterial vaginosis.
One of the only plus sides of getting cancer was that I was put on a medication to effectively shut down my ovaries - I didn't get a period for almost a year and a half. On the flip side, that meant I was dealing with the side effects of chemo AND menopause at the same time, but so much better than dealing with chemo and the cramps, nausea, migraines, and anemia that goes along with a period.
I don't need a week of intense pain to make me feel like a woman!
