Here was a good article on the 5 health care culprits that cost $1 Trillion.

It just goes to show you we don't have to wait around for the government to take action to bring costs down:

Health care's hidden hazards:Small things that cost billions - Nov. 3, 2009

I especially liked this quote:

Experts say simple lifestyle changes such as cutting back on certain foods and not smoking could substantially shrink our medical bills.

"There's no way that we are going to halt the upward spiral of health care costs until we attack the causes rather than apply the fixes," said Dr. Margaret Lewin, medical director of insurer Cinergy Health and clinical assistant professor of medicine at Cornell University.

Careful. Comments such as the one you quoted can, and probably will, be used as an excuse for either government or some health care or insurance corporation telling you how to live your life.

The idea of attacking "unhealthy" choices should scare the Bejeesus out of anyone who cares for his liberty.

I just read in our local paper this week that one way you can cut lots of money from healthcare is to stop needless testing.

Depends on how you look at it. I agree with you that there is potential for this and it scares me, too.

However, on the other hand, we can take matters into our own hands so that we can greatly reduce our dependence on the so-called "health care" system.

Much of the needless testing problem would go away if doctors weren't so afraid of being sued. I do think states need to initiate tort reform as a part of health care reform. Supposedly, Texas did this and it helped a lot. European countries also limit the awards from lawsuits. Its one of the things that keeps health care cheaper there.

YES !! this is a no brainer!! The Lawyer Lobbyists are doing a great job of pushing this point down unfortunately. (there is a popular "Tort amounts to 1% of cost" motto. that is a lie!).

And.... as noted by the OP.... encouraging people to make healthy choices would be a HUGE step in the right direction.

I'm all for people taking better care of themselves.
Why don't insurance companies reward their healthy customers?

It seems even if you take care of yourself, your premiums will still go up because of someone else's bad decisions or whatever.

The whole concept of health insurance seems stupid because everyone at someone point their life is going to become sick. It's a fact of life.
