Plus I thought the current medical use of leeches is for ares where the return circulation or lymph system was impaired to reduce swelling. Such as limb reattachments etc. How on earth would leeches help control blood loss

Exactly! Since they eat blood, it would only increase the loss, allbewit by perhaps a small amount.
