Relatives of passengers who died when the Titanic sank in 1912 are among those attending a cruise in 2012 to mark 100 years since the disaster.

The ship sank on its maiden voyage from Southampton to New York after hitting an iceberg on the night of 15 April 1912, killing more than 1,500 people.

Can you imagine that boat being hit by an iceberg?

LOL, stranger stuff has happened before and so ......

I always wondered if the OOW (Murdoch) had decided to just hit it straight on as to what effect that would have damaged the ship? I have seen a couple photo's of a ship collision in the past where the bow was damaged badly and yet still was afloat.

Seems sort of odd, doesn't it, making a party out of the anniversary of a disaster. In 2101, will the descendants of 9/11 survivors be invited to Manahattan to ride up and down in skyscraper elavators?

I wonder what the atmosphere of that cruise is supposed to be. Normally a sea cruise is happy go lucky party time, but are these folks expected to act all somber and bereived out of respect for those who perished? Or maybe they are festive until 11:40 pm on April 14th, and then they call a halt to the Limbo contest and observe a minute of silence.

I wouldnt mind going to see the location but to party the disaster might be questionable. Personally Id go, to pay respects to those who lost their lives. But just my thought.

See the location? What would distinguish it from any other patch of ocean?

I'm sure they'll have some wreath-laying ceremony or something...but it does seem a little odd. I like Grandstander's idea of the limbo party being halted for a few minutes in observation.

That's true. Next December will be the 60th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor. That doesn't exactly sound like the basis for a party (although it could certainly be an exciting one, if faux Japanese kamikaze planes were hired to do a flyover...without the guests' prior knowledge. Yeah, yeah, what a sick idea. But it would make for a great video!)

Perhaps parties need only be scheduled for anniversaries of natural disasters. In that case, we can look forward to anniversary celebrations of things like the typhoon in Thailand and Hurricane Katrina!
