I had no idea that the space station was so elaborate. What is it they do there again?

I worked on the space station from 1997 to 2001, on the electric power subsystem. I was working in an engineering support room during the P6 solar array deployment.

What is the purpose of the space station? It's a destination for the space shuttle.
What is the purpose of the space shuttle? To get to the space station.
