For me:

Modern History - 1780-2000

Ancient History - roughly 3000 BC to 500 AD

Age of Exploration/Renaissance - 1500 - 1780 AD

Pre-Ancient/Pre-Historic History - Before 3000 BC

Medieval History - 500 AD to 1500 AD

I'm familiar with Medieval and American history before the Civil War, the most out of all of these, and not by that much. I'd be very interested to learn about this though.

Based on how you have it organized, mine would basically go in chronological order from most recent to most ancient...

Modern History - 1780-2000

Age of Exploration/Renaissance - 1500 - 1780 AD

Medieval History - 500 AD to 1500 AD

Ancient History - roughly 3000 BC to 500 AD

Pre-Ancient/Pre-Historic History - Before 3000 BC

If that was carved up a bit more there would be some more variety.

It depends on what I'm interested in that week...

Prehistory to Medieval in my geographic area of interest which had no 'Ancient/Classical' period in the proper sense :-) In fact, much of the area was prehistoric for about half of the medieval!

The Renaissance and Age of Exploration without question. That's when the entire world changed. Everything. Science. Politics. Literacy. Society. Faith. You name it.

To be sure, the world is changing today faster than ever, but that's a deceptive argument. For change is now an accepted part of the world, whereas it wasn't before. The Renaissance set it into motion.

Modern History - 1780-2000
Medieval History - 500 AD to 1500 AD
Age of Exploration/Renaissance - 1500 - 1780 AD
Pre-Ancient/Pre-Historic History - Before 3000 BC
