How come the Mongols did not continue efforts to conquer Japanes Archipelago?

The chinese beat them back and back, and yet, the Mongols did not give up. The conquest of Southern Song China was the longest, inflicted most casualties on Mongols, most expensive campaign they ever tried. It took them a long time, but never gave up. Why Mongols give up so easily on Japan? They failed once, but honestly, they were smart enough to know that Japan would be easy to conquer. If they so willing to spend all those lives, energy, and time to get China, Japan is a cake walk.

The final attempted invasion was in 1281. Kublai Khan died in 1294 and his death saw the Mongol empire fragment into four independent khanates, each with its own regional goals and enemies. The segment left ruling China under Khan's grandson had its hands full keeping the Chinese portion of the former empire under control. The Mongols no longer had the strength for an overseas conquest of Japan.
