Which country should be the leader of Asia? (general, Washington, European)

I was recently given the opportunity to be involved in a political science research experiment and one of the questions was this. So i thought this is pretty interesting and would like to know your take on this.
If one day, the continent of Asia is running into a major socio-economic crisis to the point that it desperately needs the guidance and leadership of a country in which the two Asian economic giants China and Japan would be most suitable for, which country do you think would make a better leader of Asia?
I hope I am not off-topic, but I think in the next 20 or 30 years the real powerhouse of Asia is going to be India. India is going to overtake China in population, and they are making terrific technical strides with Bangalore being the "Silicon Valley" of Asia.
India has one advantage over China ... it is a democracy. China is still a totalitarian one-party Communist dictatorship. India was once part of the British Empire, so as a Commonwealth nation they are comfortable and savvy about dealing with the West.
I think both countries have huge problems. One beig that both have agig popualtion from low birth rates for deacdes. that is one reason both have high savings artes .Fuuny but when one looks China and japan are the top two owners of our debt with savers money. bascially they are goig to need that mney as its their retirment accounts ans one reaso why we need to get out debt under sontrol. They alos have other problem but those are just two. india ist ahrd to really say as they have pretty bad history of poor government fiscal problems.So who know really as just a few deacdes ago Japan was seen as the power per size i the world ;now not so mcuh. Other smaller countires combined could over take China too.

Easily Japan.
China has many more social problems and disparity between income levels and quality of life.
The Chinese encourage fast production at the cost of safety, the environment, and the lower class.
Not to mention Japanese are much more socially tolerant, though Chinese have become better. And Tokyo is already one of the three major trading hubs, along with New York and London.
At least Japan had demonstrated generosity and help during the Asian economic crisis and humanitarian crises (i.e. Bali, Sichuan earthquake) despite the fact that her economy had been stagnant for three decades and counting.
China? I can't think of any Chinese assistance in times of crises like these.
Also, the Chinese move to devalue the yuan in order to boost the competitiveness of her exports is a cause for concern.

The premise is non-sense, IMO.
In general socio-economic crises are either national, or, if they expand beyond boundaries, are tied to trade networks (thus the current european crisis happened alongside the US crisis, but Russia did not participate) They are not "continental"
Second, when they occur, the nations suffering from them do not look to others for "guidance and leadership" (unless their dependency forces them to, as Greece takes "guidance" from Germany now, and hates the Germans for it)
China? I can't think of any Chinese assistance in times of crises like these.

China's recent foreign aid:
"At this summer’s fifth Conference of the Forum on Africa-China Cooperation, the red dragon pledged $20 billion of new aid to the developing continent. That is more than spare change."
