I guess the PLO had done an assassination on US soil in the 1970s, but it was more nationalist than distinctly Islamist.

The enemy was on the move from the Soiviet Union and settled in and began their base operations in Sudan, they were re-tooling and reorganizing. Lead by their leader OBL who was willing to TRADE 700 miles of new built highways for the country's sesame seed trade. They lived in a compound off the main road that was under the watchful eye of Warrior Mentor Billy Waugh who spent 50 years in the United States Special Force and (SAD) The Special Activities Division of the CIA as a Ground Branch Operator. Some of his more critical assignments took place in Khartoum, Sudan during 1989, where he performed Actionable surveillance and intelligence gathering on terrorist leaders Carlos the Jackal and Osama bin Laden. Warrior Mentor was told before hand this wasn't a "Red Tag" operation, only ten days of actionable intel and then get out of dodge before they realise that Billy wasn't a consulate employee but in fact CIA. They came very close to meeting again years lator.

When Warrior Mentor Billy turned 72 years old on the day he and Tier 1 Delta landed at foot hills of Tora Bora. Exactly two months after we we're attacked on 9/11 during Operation Enduring Freedom - Afghanistan (OEF-A) . Warrior Mentor Billy Waugh's book has it all in detail. A fantastic read for people who love to read about US Military Operations USASOC and Hunting the Jackal: A Special Forces and CIA Soldier's Fifty Years on the Frontlines of the War Against Terrorism 2004

Off topic, but I remember being very patriotic in the early 90's. During the Gulf War, there were white button up shirts with the American flag on them. I can also recall people wearing American flag blue and red colored tank tops with white jean shorts. Of course, everyone knows of the 1992 US Dream Team.
