And environment feeds upon itself as well. If the contamination made some behaviors acceptable they might not have, or more common then this is the base. Roman upper class society became about self indulgence and sexual exploitation. In such an atmosphere, someone like Caligula could get his start in his ways and have the chance to rule. In the world future emperiors grew up in many ways there were no rules. The bizarre behavior of those contaminated by lead could have played a part in making that situatuion.
