Presidential Security and LE Techniques 1960's vs Today (JFK Assignation) (assassin, assassination)

Ok am sitting last night watching the PBS/Frontline program about the JFK assignation and Lee Harvey Oswald and am struck how so many things were "wrong" and undetected then that wouldn't happen today.

Local Dallas, TX newspapers printed the exact route of the presidential motorcade. Was that normal and does it still happen today?

Next it seemed from footage that the security surrounding JFK was mostly concerned with threats from the ground (lots of SS riding on sideboards and or keeping crowds at a distance), was not the area surrounding the motorcade checked and secured?

One or two persons reported seeing a man with a rifle out of the window of the Texas School Book Depository building, but no one reported or seemed to thing much of it. Indeed a photographer got pictures showing Oswald taking aim, but again nothing was said or done.

After the shooting everyone seemed to focus on the grassy knoll, leaving the TSBR building unsecured long enough for Oswald to not only hang around in the cafeteria but then slip out. A local LE officer briefly stopped Oswald but let him leave. Ok, the POTUS has just been shot and you are letting persons leave?

When the rifle was found it was held up and shown to the media on several occasions. Isn't that contaminating evidence?

LHO was paraded in front of the media and others in close quarters, anyone could have done anything. Indeed in one picture Jack Ruby is seen clearly in the background. What was he and others not directly involved with LE or the DA's office doing there in the first place?

Why did the local LE make repeated and continued reports of what they were doing with Oswald including the date and time he was to be moved? Also why wasn't access to the holding jail building where Oswald was being held secured? Jack Ruby pretty much walked in and no one seemed surprised that he was downstairs in the area where the elevators were located.

There simply is no comparison between the practice of personal protection in 1963 and 1981 much less today nor is there any comparison between how the police handle prisoners or evidence. There simply nothing to compare.

I've wondered the same things. Perhaps we have had to endure so many tragedies that nowadays we follow carefully planned out procedures.

Although...there were already 3 Presidential assassinations and several failed attempts prior to Kennedy's, so there should have been more caution.
