To the extent that people talk about the Lebanese Civil War, they usually talk about the massacre of Palestinians at the Sabra and Shatila refuge camps by a Christian militia, and even then they put much of the blame on Israel. In fact, many more people died in Lebanon at the hands of other Lebanese than from Israelis. And the civil war wasn't a two-sided conflict. Muslims and Christians fought amongst themselves almost as much as they did against people of other religions or ethnic groups. There was fighting between those who saw themselves as Lebanese nationalists and those who thought Lebanon was part of a greater Syria. If anyone can be said to have "won" this civil war, it was most likely Syria.

The Lebanese Civil War started in 1975 and was caused by the way the French set up the Lebanese Government structure before vacating the country to give its independence. In 1976 Syria already invaded parts of Lebanon in order to control some of it. Al of this happened way before the Sabra and Shatila refugee camp massacre which was only in 1982. So the Israelis really had nothing to do with the outbreak of the Lebanese Civil War.

I know that Israel had very little to do with the civil war. It is just that it seems that whenever people mention the conflict, they usually talk about that camp massacre and what Israel did or didn't do, as if that were the only important incident in the war.

That hasn't been my experience since the camp massacre isn't really relevant to the greater/bigger picture of this war.
