I think it's more like 2014 and here's why:

*The Internet was already huge in 2000, but barely even existed in 1986. It was very crude and hard to use in the 80s, in fact the web part of the Internet wasn't even test-run until 1990!

*The fall of communism in the early nineties hasn't been matched by a political revolution of equal size even despite events like 9/11 and the Arab Spring.

*Cell phones were already very common in several countries by 2000, which makes it seem more like today than like '86 when they were bulky, extremely expensive and only available in very limited areas.

*Fashion from the early 2000s is much more like mid-10s fashion than it is like mid-80s fashion. Though to be fair it's pretty different from both.

*2000 was defined by most of the same issues of today. Globalization, Islamism, neoliberalism, global warming etc. Back in '86 it was still all about the Cold War. Back in the 80s people didn't think of themselves as living in a global village but rather as living in nation states.

*The technological changes between 1986-2000 were much more profound and revolutionary than the changes since, which have been more evolutionary. So much for technology "accelerating".

I voted more like 1986 because I believe 9/11 changed so much much of our world.

More like the mid 70's with the recession having just started to end. But definitely a much slower recovery in large part of US. now but same shift in economy seen then from recession which rushes in change as normal.

You'll have to ask somebody who is old enough to remember all 3 time periods.

Shouldn't be very hard, since you'd only have to be about 35 years old or so.

This is very unusual question. I don't know the answer in the context of the United States or Europe because I lived in Russia in 1986 (and now I do). I was in the second form of school. What things were better in those days? There were less cars in the streets in Russia. It was very difficult to buy a car in that period. But the roads were almost empty! If you a good walker you can understand me.

And what things were worse in 1986? The computers were very expensive in the USSR and I couldn't even dream to buy one (we knew nothing about Nintendo or Atari)! I belong to Young Communist League Organisation. I was "oktyabrenok" - That was the name of a child 7-12 years old. In 12-14 we became pioneers. I had to take part in political studies. It was tedious!

- This isn't a photo of mine but I had a badge like that on my jacket. This is young Lenin.

I'd like to tell an interesting fact about period before "perestroyka". If you got into a Russian bus as a passenger then had to set fares in a plastic box. And you could took your short change yourself! There was no conductor and everyone was honest. Now there is a conductor in every bus in Russia. People have become more cunning and greedier.

1986 was very, very different world from even 1992 from a pop-culture perspective. In 2000, the attitude and lifestyle was much, much different from now. Music-wise, 1986 and 2000 are many universes apart from 2014.

1986 is many universes apart from 2000; 2000 is many universes apart from 2014.

I would probably say neither.

2000 is more like 2014 than 1986. Things were so much different in the 80's. Music and pop culture were much different. Between 2000 and 2014, the changes are far more subtle. The music hasn't changed all that much and clothing styles changed slightly, but not to a large degree.

You're comparing 2000 to the mid-70's? Huh? The year 2000 was pretty good economically until the market bubble burst in October. Then we were in for about 10 years of economic turmoil. I would say things have improved the past 2-3 years, but not to 90's levels. Not even close.

I'd say music has changed quite a bit actually. Could you imagine Lenny Kravitz or Jamiroquai being best sellers in 2014?
