I remember watching Star Trek with my boyfriend in the 60's. We were in high school.
It was very popular. (Boyfriend became husband in 1970, 44 years later we still like it )

How is this a history question? Shouldn't it be in the TV forum?

It was actually not popular at all in it's original run, except for a very loyal niche audience (who managed to just barely get it renewed for a 3rd season via I think a letter campaign). It lasted for half a 3rd season before finally being cancelled due to low ratings.
It's popularity came in reruns.

I was eight years-old when I first saw the show. Star Trek did not attract a large number of viewers (ratings) on its original NBC run. But the show did incredibly well in syndicated reruns for many years, seen at 4pm in most places, due to an interest by teenagers in space travel (due to the 1969 moon landing and subsequent Apollo flights through the 1970's).

It was on at the same time as My 3 Sons, The Dating Game, That Girl, Bewitched, and the CBS movie. Why would anyone watch Star Trek? Those were all popular shows.

I was at home in Maxwell, Nebraska for that first season and lived with relatives in Iowa for the next two seasons. I was pretty deep into science fiction at that time and would wander on down by the creek and think up my own stories (seldom Star Trek related, though). Although I have seen most of the episodes of all the Star Trek series I would never have been considered a Trekkie.
