I was 13 at the time and even at that age I wasn't buying that. I figured that she was trying to flee and the agent shoved her back into the car.
More recently I've read that what was actually going on is that she went into shock, rather understandably, and got it into her hear that she had to collect the bits of her husband's brains and skull which had splattered on the trunk.
