I have watched some You tube stuff about "black diggers" in eastern Europe who just just loot the body, then toss the bones aside verse "grey diggers" who may loot, but at least turn the remains over to the German war grave commission. It is pretty grim.I also read a lighter story of people scouring the woods of the Courland Penninsula looking for a fabled stash of valuable SS accoutrements.

The German units bypased on the penninsula included some SS regiments. When the Germans surrendered in mass in May 1945, the SS men feared an unpleasant reception. They then, as entire units, stripped off all their SS insignia, buttons, helmets, tank destroyer awards, SS rings etc. before walking out of the woods towards assembly points that the Soviets had pre designated. The story goes that if one can find the last bivouak sites of these units, one can make a financial killing by collecting hundreds of the discarded SS items.

There were also many people that sold nazi paraphernalia in some former east countries just after the demise of the USSR, lots of medals, etc. I doubt that they are legit.

That's no doubt true! BTW, I used to collect Soviet militaria, and back in late '90s a dealer who I was friends with told me that after the Fall, enterprising Russians bought the equipment that manufactured uniforms, etc. and began producing them for the collectors market! He showed me how to check the labels to tell if it was a genuine Soviet issue item or an "aftermarket" product.
