That's subjective and has no relationship whatsoever.
They did steal the land and killed many owners.
Many died during the probation, as any squatter could squat any land owned by californians and shoot the owner.

Unfortunately and seriously this is exactly the view of history taught in Ivy League schools. I graduated Cornell in 1979, having been fed a diet of that kind of rhetoric for four years. I even voted for Carter in 1980 on that basis.

The story line was essentially that if we were a bit nicer to the rest of the world it would love us. Hasn't turned out so well. Reagan's approach worked a lot better.
