Even if we helped nothing would really change in the Middle Kingdom. There's an old saying "No matter who conquers China, their grandchildren will be Chinese."

But I do appreciate the chance to add another "cause" to the "damned if we do, damned if we don't" files.

As if sending a few million Chinese to their graves was going to make them friendly to us. China and Russia are large powerful countries that will always be rivals to us, and each other, regardless of who is running the show. Do you think the Chinese have forgotten what Japan did? What makes you think they would conveniently forget a war of American aggression?

China had fission weapons by 1964, and a fusion bomb by 1967. If we had sent an army to China, we would have lost that army.

If you think that the middle-east is a chaotic mix of competing and allied militias armies by comparison the Cultural Revolution would make the middle east looking a region of perfect unity. Not only were their competing units of the Red Guard, there was conflict between the Chinese Communist Party and the Red Guards, the Red Guard vs. the People's Liberation Army and factions of the Chinese Communist Party vs the leadership of the PRC itself.

Who exactly in China would we have sided with?

We could have even aligned ourselves with Russia, (not that Russia would have needed our help, as they could have done it alone) over this one, as China was living in fear of Russia, at that time, they were at a very weak point, it would be have been a piece of cake to sweep into China at that time,
You weren't a pre-war Bush advisor would you? Anyone who thinks that invading a land mass the size of China with a population of its size as being a peace of cake is seriously deluded. The very fact that the Soviets were ready to utilize nuclear weapons after engaging in an inconclusive border stalemate should dispute the argument on its face. It was far more important from America's interest than for China and the Soviet Union to be at each other's throat, the people of China be damned.

Attacking China is a bad idea.

none of the stupid wars we have fought or started in the last 50 years were worth fighting. I feel bad for the lost lives and the wasted treasure.

We have wasted all the advantages we had , the USA lacks the fiber required. Instead of building a better safer nation, we have class wars, mass under employment, a lack of job and retirement security and a public that has been brainwashed into believing we are free when in fact even the Europeans have much more freedom than most americans can comprehend.

You can ask why did we not attack China, I will ask why do we waste lives and treasure attacking country after country on the most flimsy of pretexts. remember nobody made us go to asia and start wars, we did that all on our own. Nobody made us create Saddam and then attack him when they tried to start a new Oil burse....

we made most of our own problems.

The Russians would have won the cold war if the United States was foolish enough to waste its resources on China.
