France did not want to go athiest. They just did not want the pope and the Catholic Church to hold as much power as they did. As a matter of fact, Pope Pius VI condemed the Declaration of Rights.
Thanks for that link TrudeyRose.....

My take on that read was that that Pius VI was basically weak and incompetent.

I have often wondered this same thing about England/Russia with the executions of the Czar and his family during the Bolshevik Revolution. Why didnt Englands royal family offer asylum to their cousins? Great question OP!

I've found that the "great" Popes were few and far between. There were very few really good or effective ones over the centuries, and some were downright bad! I don't mean this as a slur on the Catholic Church..just stating the facts

If you're registered with the New York Times* you can find many articles there that cover the breaking Russian news of that time, just about day by day. Hugely interesting!

I found a photo of the Place De Concorde where Marie Antoniette was beheaded along with King Louie XVI and others. They were executed at the spot were the statue of former King Louie XV was mounted but was torn down during the revolution. Eventually the place where the statue and the Guillotines occured is now where the Obelisk now stands. It was put there in 1836 by king Louis Phillipe to mark the exact spot where the Executions took place.

Place De Concorde and the tall Obelisk.

The Obelisk was actually relocated from Luxor, Egypt.

Yeap it came over in 1831. Even though the statue of King Louie's Grandfather was torn down i wish the would have save the foundation that it was mounted on as they put the Guiillotine right in front of it so Louie would have seen what they had done just before he was beheaded.

I wish they would have saved the foundation as well. However, the statue was torn down in the revolutionary madness that engulfed Paris, so they were trying to get rid of every little bit of monarchical symbolism that remained. The statue did last longer than the Bastille - it was largely gone by the end of 1789.

Thought this movie scene fit with this thread. A scene (1.30 sec) from the movie '' The affair of the necklace'' where Marie Antoinette is beheaded.
