I can only theorize. Familiarity and remoteness. In some cultures it was nearly impossible for young men to get alone time with girls not related to them. This meant the only women they had any personal relationship with were those related to them. In some areas the family lives in such remote communities that the majority of the people they know are relatives. The biological desire for sex combined with the cultural push to reproduce could overcome any stigma of having sexual relations with those closely related to yourself. In some older eras there was no stigma against marrying and having sex with those closely related to yourself, especially if you were royal or noble. In those instances they would try to bred as close to the bloodline as possible until they realized this led to serious issues of mental and or physical health eventually. Today we know that when two close relatives mate they could produce a child with a shared genetic defect that is regressive in both parents. After several generations of close relations breeding those issue become more commonly seen.
What surprised me about the OP was the inclusion of the mother. Seeing as among our biggest curses is make the accusation of doing that with the mother is there some culture that was known for it?
Sure it is a porn plot for the mom, but more likely the step mother to engage with her child but that is fantasy because it is not accepted.
Well, according to bible, entire humanity came from incest.... so why worry? Quod licet Jovi, non licet bovi?
Yes.... I always chuckle a little when some zealot tries to lecture me about "biblical marriage." The point about the royal families of Europe constantly intermarrying in a small pool is well taken, that's my main appreciation of Harry & Megan breaking with tradition.
The OP question is simply one cultural era's view of another's, far removed. The idea that one culture can be judged by another's notions (to use one overly compact word) is... wrong.
They didn't think it was horrid and disgusting. End of meaningful debate, IMVHO.
I know that in ancient/medieval times incest was very prevalent, but...by god, how could ANYONE have sex with their sister/mother/aunt/cousin and NOT think it's all kinds of disgusting? I get the whole "wanting to keep it in the family", and going on modern times, but no matter how "pressured" I was, I'd rather shoot myself than any of that. Do you really think even in ancient/medieval times you would have to be an incredibly mentally ill person to think having sex with your mom/sister/cousin would be awesome?
Cousin relationship was prevalent until recently, Einstein married his first cousin, Charles Darwin, Rudy Giuiliani (2nd cousin), Winnie the Pooh "Christopher Robin" who the cartoon was based off of grew up to marry his cousin, Franklin Roosevelt married Eleanor Roosevelt.
Even recently I had a co-worker from Jamaica who recently slept with his cousin (apparently his brother did also).
So it might be gross but its happening.
