the reconstruction time frame in the south, about the military during that time and how they kept records.

I've been doing genealogy and I've noticed that none of the military are in the federal census records. I'm sure they kept good records during that time but where would I find them?

Thanks in advance

I dont know that I can help you much, but what time period are you referring to? I can tell you that the counties changed so many times, you have to first know what county they were last in, and go to where those records are kept. You can send me a private message, and I'll try to help you if you want. I had a rough go finding the Revolution land changes. I am not a member of ancestry dot com, but they have an extensive amount of public records information. The LDS have a search database, and if you contact a library or museum library, they can get you to the LDS site for free. Good luck.

LOL--the person you need is Newt Gingrich--I don't think he posts in this forum but he has written several books on this topic and would gladly share FYI if you emailed him.

I'm in Atlanta, GA and we have a lot of resources on this period.

Try the Atlanta History Center>>>

If you know a specific county/city/state then that might be a way to begin.

I'm sure Pat Sabin would be glad to share ideas--she created this website on the history of Gwinnett County, GA. Many oldtimers around in this part of Georgia who might actually recall Reconstruction--email her and ask for ideas.
