How important is the selection of a VP ?

Not important at all.

Evidence of this was given by Al Gore , who picked Liebermann as his VP choice.

Four years later, Al Gore wouldn't even endorse Liebermann when Liebermann announced his run for President.

Al Gore ,very early, jumped on Howard Dean's " bandwagon"

I guess Al Gore wanted to be sure he was on the side of a winner. Didn't work out that way, though.

The common wisdom is that the VP is important in winning the election. For instance JFK picked LBJ to appeal to southern voters. Such ticket balancing has played an important role in choices of VP's. Whether its true that such matters in elections I don't know.

I think history will reveal that Dick Cheney was the virtual president and made the big decisions for the first few months of the George W. Bush administration. Few, if any, VPs have ever had the kind of power that Dick Cheney had during his tenure.

I would say Dick Cheney.

Then again with the conspiracy that Spiro Agnew led, one can say he did too, he made quite a lot of money. And Money = Power.

No VP has had any real power. What "duties" they have are spelled out in U.S. Constitution. Sounds like your post is confusing "popularity or notariety" more so than power. Everyone you mentioned has been in the news but that does not give them "power"........

Influence might have been a better choice of words.
