I've done a little. I'm working on a watch band kit from tandy right now. I'm thinking about carving my initials in old english letters but I haven't decided for sure.
The tools seem pretty reasonable to me, you can get a starter set from tandy for about $40 and I've seen them for less on ebay. There are higher end tools but I think they are more for professionals than hobbyists. Tooling leather isn't the cheapest material you could work with though.
The basic starter kit would be the cheapest way to find out if you like carving leather. Leather has a life of it's own. A piece of leather can also be ruined by a careless cut so to start out, buy your chosen piece pre-cut and if you plan to lace it, pre-punched. It can be expensive, at first. Build up an inventory with basics such as rubber cement, a package of lacing needles, a few dye colors, etc. If you find you do enjoy it, to further your inventory of tools & supplies, check out pawn shops. Tools, lacing and equipment are often pawned. I haven't done any work for several years now, but spent most of my childhood, teenage years and early adulthood working leather.
