Is Atlanta really that socially backward? And isn't the Georgia Dome basically next to Phillips Arena?
You'd behave the same under such a scenario. Atlanta's demographics, with respect to the location of the arena, along with a sport that is more heavily touted by a certain demographic, has led to what you see at Philips for basketball games. Any other city would see the same thing happen if they had the same demographics.
Even though I think the white aspect of it is a little off since they're some blacks in the burbs that won't go downtown for the same reason....the Falcons answer is simple, 80% of their games, at least, are during daylight hours,.....not nearly as unsafe....
Plus, blacks don't tend to come to Falcons games at nearly the percentage that they do to Hawks game. Of course, the fact that there are only eight home games a season in football, the football culture of the south, and that they are day games also has a bit to do with the difference.
Regarding the Thrashers, given the dynamics of who enjoys hockey, you could probably have counted the number of blacks on your hand at their games. Last season, there were just as many blacks on the Thrashers team (which they seem to be touting all blacks in the NHL) as there were blacks in the arena, concessions and vending not counting.

Careful there, you're pushing it with your last 2 posts. I've been to enough Thrashers games to know that while there may have been more vendors and concession black vendors than black fans, to say that "you can count them on one hand' is irresponsible and wrong....(seems like you enjoyed saying that)......
Just about all the vendorsand workers are black at Phillips Arena, so that might be over 1k workers, but still that doesn't mean that they were only 5 blacks at each Thrashers game.....just wrong to say.

Not enough population density for a franchise in underlined cities. QC is and Hamilton is almost 500,000 city population, the others are much smaller cities and I really question if cities like Chicago and Montreal have large enough metro areas to support 2 teams.

Anyways, If Carolina, Dallas and Nashville can "make it work" no reason ATL can't.
Someone said that MLS will catch NHL in the next ten years. I'm a (moderate) soccer fan but that's unlikely. People actually watch the Stanley Cup. Few people outside of soccer die hards know MLS playoffs even EXIST. Ratings for NHL playoffs and finals are respectable while that of the MLS are MINISCULE. I've seen ratings of 25 to 30 percent locally for NHL final markets, but LA which houses one of the more popular and successful soccer clubs got a measly 1.5. Yea I know it was on a sunday, but so what, there is no NFL team in LA and I bet even the Kings would do better.
And also Soccer fanbase is split between Mexican League fans, English League fans and MLS. There is some crossover naturally but MLS-only fans make up the much smaller group.
The Hawks are the hot and cold team, not the Falcons. The Hawks were the draw in the 80s. Today, most white people don't desire to see them, given its location downtown, and the fact that a white person would be heavily outnumbered at a game. Many fear for their safety. Just the facts. If you'll notice a television cast of the Hawks, unlike other NBA teams, looking into the stands looks like a sea of black faces, with a few whites in the mix.
