I am looking for a real 1950s formica kitchen table and chairs. No luck locally. I looked online and I only found a place that sells replicas and that's not what I had in mind.
Any ideas? Thanks!
Ebay usually has some. If you have some vintage shops in your area, talk to them and tell them what you are looking for. It might be the type of thing they normally pass on during their buying trips because there's not enough demand in your area, but they'd pick one up if they knew they had a buyer on the line for it.
If you do enlist the help of a vintage store, it would be worthwhile to shop online and know what color and perhaps some details you'd be interested in. For instance older tables have a ribbed aluminum edge, whereas older ones typically have a thinner profile with a laminate edge. How many chairs do you require (many only have two chairs, not the full four, and they may not match the table color, so be specific if you have a preference). Table leg details very quite a bit too. Some are a double tube construction, with a bit of a bend to it. Others have thinner metal reeds that fan out, others have a split tube leg. There are pedestal bases too.
The more specific you can be, the more the store will get the impression that you are serious--and the more serious they will be in looking for you. And the more likely that they will bring back a table you like!
If you're in Wilkes-Barre, you could check in Pittsburgh. There are tons of retro furniture outlets in the 'burgh and I've seen Formica tables in a lot of them. One option would be to call these people who used to be on Butler St. in the Lawrenceville neighborhood (Homestead is just across the river from the Squirrel Hill):

As everyone noted above- the real thing will be from individuals by way of Craigslist, EBay, or estate sales/auctions.
Here's another possibility- Pastense 1950's retro kitchen diner tables
They are reproductions. And very good reproductions- I even remember some of the styles.
And it definitely has to have "boomerang" laminate from Formica. That's as real as it gets. Along with the high gloss vinyl covered chairs that made your backside stick to it like super-glue! (Ooops, wrong generation!)
