We have a 3 bedroom house and are expecting our 3rd child, so the two older children will be sharing a room. Our daughter is only two but very girly and expressive about what she likes/dislikes. Our son is 5 and excited about sharing his room with his sister- even offering to paint it pink for her! But I of course want to do something that will work for both of them.
I was considering a castle theme with knights and dragons and princesses. Other than that I'm drawing a blank. I also am not sure how to even go about doing the castle thing...I'm not a good decorator and horrible at visualizing. (I would prefer to have a picture of a room already done and then simply copy it..haha) I'm not a big fan of primary colors and would like them to be able to have boy and girl themed bedding. Is there anyway to blend the two nicely together?
They'll do custom decals if you find some pictures of the castle/princess themes you like, and they'll peel right off the walls when it's time to come up with a new theme.
We used wall decals and also wallpaper style murals for our kids at different points. It's a great idea - any internet search engine will help you find something pre-made pretty easily. They often have pictures of rooms decorated around the theme as well to help you if you're not feeling particularly creative.
Also, I have seen beds made in the form of castles, dragons, etc. Again, the internet is your friend.
I would pick out betting the 'coordinates' but doesn't really match then paint the walls a common color in that bedding. Your DD could pick out a pink/green comforter and your DS a blue and green and then paint the wall green, for example.
Going with a Disney theme is easy when you have a boy and a girl to work around too.
I would caution you about going with too much of a 'character' theme unless you want to do it all over again in a year or two. What a 5 year old boy likes is going to be vastly different from what a 7 year old boy likes.
Instead of doing themes you could divide the room into two colors.

If you don't like splitting the room into two colors, pick a unisex color for the entire room:
I wouldn't do themes. Your baby isn't going to have his/her own room forever. Eventually you will play "musical rooms" and switch the kids around again.
I don't like themes either. I would let each child chose some features in the room that they love, regardless of whether it "goes" together or not. While I would prefer the rooms in my house to be decorated according to what I like, I think it's important to let children express their creativity and feel as though their creativity is respected.
Why do all kid rooms have to be gussied up and/or thematic? I shared a room with my brother until I was 10 and when we vacated it for rearranged spaces, by parents moved into it with no changes made except different furniture. I don't remember feeling deprived that my room didn't look like a replica of something else besides a bedroom meant to be slept in (and homework done at the desk).
I just finished designing a room for boy and girl
Please find it here Shared bedroom
I decided to use a high bookcase for dividing the room. Thereby you can decorate the parts of the room for boy and for girl without mixing it.
