Yes, but the only pain with it is, that all looks great in the evening when you go to bed - how it looks in the morning is another story. Depends on a person and sleep habits, usually the top sheets and the blanket separate, or even slide to the side of the bed or floor, and then you find yourself covered with unprotected comforter - which means you need to wash it more often.
A cover eliminates that issue - the comforter is always protected, inside. For those who use down comforters, washing them so oft is a PITA.
Not sure why OP has such issues with the comforter crumbling in the cover ( maybe a sleek fabric? ). My comforters stay inside the covers without causing any problems.
The proper fitting is a key, maybe. Too big cover leaves too much room for the comforter to move inside.
The cover should be the same size or slightly smaller than the comforter to prevent it from moving around.
Teddy, flannel or cotton covers ( and comforter fabric) are the best.
No pain wrestling comforter into a cover. I use this method:
Turn inside out the cover, grab corners of the comforter and the corners of the cover, hold all 4 together and just slide the cover over the comforter.
Exactly like this:
