So, I've done what I do - impulse buy. Found two matching chairs on Craigslist that I love. However, I have this navy blue velvet sofa that's determined to be a pain. Is it possible to tie these two together somehow or should I start sofa shopping? The sofa is less than a year old so shopping for a new one would take some serious husband convincing.

The living room still hasn't been remodeled yet. However, it's a dark room due to a screened porch off the one window. Thus, we're thinking of going with white wood plank walls and the flooring will be a Santos Mahoghany.

So - any ideas on if and how these could work together?? To note, the living room opens to the kitchen (in process of remodel) which will be mostly white (white cabinets, white walls, Kashmir granite countertops) and has red accents (the dining chairs and buffet). I really need to control my impulse buys but I really like these chairs!

Here's a picture of the velvet beast sofa.

Here's a picture of one of the chairs (in an odd yellow light) and a closeup of the fabric.

So, I've been playing with a design board for the living room. I have, thanks to my proclivity to impulse buy furniture, quite a few extra pieces of furniture I can switch out for this room. I have a driftwood coffee table sitting in storage. Also, I have a few jute and seagrass rugs. Currently, the rug in this room is an Iranian red and blue oriental. Thinking the blonde jute would be a better fit. With adding these pieces to the room and assuming white wood plank walls, this is the board with the velvet couch and the new chair fabric. Thoughts? Is it a cohesive look or no? I'm by the ocean so the bit of coastal feel is intentional.

If you want the chairs to go with the sofa reupholster them.
And for a nautical/beach theme go with 7oz. White canvas duck.

If reupholstering ain't in your budget- that's one hot mess.

Okay, so one vote for hot mess. I'm not trying to be distinctly coastal but elements of coastal fit in fine here. That's why I mentioned it. No other way to bring the pieces together besides reupholstering? I'm trying to avoid that.

Yes, my problem is and has always been the blue velvet beast. The other furniture, including the new chairs match the rest of the planned decor perfectly. I think I'll have to break down and make a slipcover for this thing. In all fairness, at the time I bought it, I was planning on a blue and white scheme in the living room but ended up changing that up.

If I made a slipcover for the sofa, it would be in white in all likelihood. How does it look in white with all the other same choices?

If you make the sofa white, you should paint the walls a different color. I think you'll regret a white sofa just as much as a blue sofa since white will get dirty so quickly. It would look great beige or tan.

I can totally relate to the blue not going with anything. I once made the mistake of choosing blue wall to wall carpeting for a master bedroom. What a disaster. Never again.

You could decorate around the blue, but too late now. I agree, you will hate an all white sofa. With the warm tones you have chosen in you other furniture, the stark white will look as out of place as the navy blue. The fabric on that chair on my computer looks like it has a wheat colored background..look for something closer to that color, with some texture or a subtle pattern.

I like the navy sofa with your red and beige colored chairs. The red and blue oriental sounds like it would work; can you post a pic of it? There is a paint you should check out. It's called "Bleeker Beige HC-80" by Benjamin Moore. You can "google" it and you can see paint ideas with the color. It's a great taupe/beige color that matches everything and is the color of the sand that meets the ocean. Not every nautical house has to have blue and white. See if this color will make the colors in your chairs and the sofa work together.

If the screened porch needs furniture, can you put the driftwood coffee table and the jute rugs in there?

I would remove the red pillows from the chairs, too. When you use pillows, don't point them up, keep them square. Shop for pillows that have taupe, red, and navy colors for the sofa.

Whatever you do, forget about the white sofa! I tried it myself and it lasted for three months and then I went to denim slipcovers. White shows dirt you never knew you had.
