We had hardwood floors installed throughout most of our house recently and I love them. We are going to replace the tile in the kitchen but it's going to have to wait because we're changing the footprint in the kitchen and it's a HUGE and very expensive project so we're saving up the money to do it. SOOOO, the question came up when our contractor was laying the hardwood - do you want to spend the money on three transitions (the piece of faux wood that slides in between the tile and hardwood) or do you want us to fill in the transition area with a silicone that matches the grout, since the transitions will just be pulled back out again in a few months?

We opted for the "temporary" silicone. The thing is - WE LOVE IT. It's completely level between the tile and the wood, and there's no little bumpy thing that catches every bit of sand or dirt.

When we replace the kitchen floor, we're going to opt to do without the transitions. Has anyone else done this? I think it looks great and I have always hated those transition thingies anyway.

Do you mean the threshold between rooms in doorways? Or are talking about an entire room width transitioning? How big is your space between surfaces? I have one in the bathroom to the hallway that we are debating the same thing, between granite tile floor and carpet.

I'm just talking about the space in the doorways/arches between the rooms. I'm telling you - this "temporary fix" looks WAYYYYY BETTER than the transition pieces.

Floor - with transition piece (before we had the great idea to do away with them):

Floor without transition piece:

Up close (excuse the tile - that's going bye bye when we redo the kitchen):

That looks way better without!

And I can't tell you how many times I've stubbed my toe or broken a toenail on those transitional trim pieces.

Actually, though I appreciate the style you show us in your house, this looks unfinished to my eye. But if you like it I'd say do it!

Well, the ironic thing is that it IS unfinished - this is temporary till we get our stone floor in the kitchen in. But it will look something like this.

I personally prefer it over those bumpy, fake wood transitions. I'm pretty sure we're going with the smooth look.

We have a 'non-threshhold'... ceramic foyer abutting the berber-carpeted family room.
It was done in 1994. I had no idea it bucked a trend....
