In the eating area of our kitchen, we currently have the basic builder-issued chandelier.
We want to replace it, but don't want to block the artwork on the wall behind it.
We prefer simple designs, and can't find a chandelier we like.
Would it be appropriate to install a semi-flush mount light fixture there? Or are they more appropriate for other rooms?
yes, it shoud be possible. It'd look better if your ceiling is flat, as opposed to a sloping cathedral type ceiling.
I think the main concern is how high your ceiling are. If they're kind of high it may look a bit silly to have a light way up there but then your artwork may visually compensate for that.
You can use whatever light you want. They are easy enough to change if you sell the house and someone else wants a chandelier or a pendant light there. The issue is more that the light you want to use provides the amount of light you need for that space. Assuming the art work is not tiny, I don't see how the chandelier would block the art. Can you post a couple photos of the space? It's easier to give suggestions with if we can see the space.
Is the main concern the chandelier style or the artwork? But while you can of course get anything you want, a chandelier/dropped light is designed to illuminate the table, not the room in general. So you may not get the kind of lighting you expect while sitting at the table. Assuming the artwork is a more minor concern, I would go to a good lighting store and find someone to work with and tell them what you want in terms of style, and I'm sure they will be able to point you towards things with simpler, cleaner lines.
