Why would they be tacky? I don't use them personally but if I had a really nice dining table, I would probably use placemats and a runner down the middle for the serving dishes. I would have them match somewhat.
Not tacky. What's tacky is having people over and just slapping the plates down on the bare table. And not a nicely finished wood table either.
Can't tell you how many people have told me they "never" put anything on the table under the plates, and for that matter, they don't have dishes any more--just paper plates. Call me old-fashioned but I think that's taking minimalism a little too far.
Rectagular farmhouse table. Red and cream buffalo check cotton placemats from Sur La Table. Red and cream vintage tea towel-inspired cloth napkins in wooden rings. Roses from my garden in a low vase as the centerpiece.

Ooh you will hate having dinner at my house. I don't have nice wooden finish table, just a solid planked one that is weathered and worn, just the way I love it. I have casual dinners family style when guests comes over. And they seem to be fine with it as they come back often.

Exactly. We have a new rustic-style ranch house. A fancy dining table would look out of place. Ours is new, and nice, but in a rustic way. We use place mats all the time. And "casual dinners family style" describes our entertaining perfectly. We've had enough of the formal dining room stuff. We're retired now, and the casual life is more appealing to us. Everybody loves our new digs, and nobody says it's "tacky". It's authentic.

For real??? Why?
I always have the dinner table looking nice. Not "president is coming for dinner" decorated, but we have nice table cloth(child resistant), nice plates etc. I could not eat if my table looked ugly and bare.
My parents used to host a lot of formal dinners, and I enjoy having a nicely arranged table & also teach my kids table manners, etiquette etc.

Just because there's no tablecloth doesn't mean "bare". There's centerpieces (one reason I grow flowers. If I didn't Mrs. NBP would buy new ones every week), candles. Stuff like that.
If one were to have such a fish would it be ok if you clapped your hands and it sang "don't worry be happy" as the tail and face moved toward you? Or would that be "tacky?"

I would think that it could substitute for grace.
