What's on your stairs if you have a tile floor?

I am looking to reno my family room in a split-level house. The staircase and room are off the kitchen. Currently there's old gray carpet covering the staircase and the family room. I am seriously considering pulling that our and installing wood-look tile. But if I tile the floor, what do I put on the stairs?

The cheapest solution is to stay with carpet.

The other choice is "finished treads"- is it possible to do that with your current treads? Maybe. Or you may be able to remove whatever is there and install some oak treads.

I must be missing something. Why can you not put the tile on the stairs?

I don't know that you can't, but I wouldn't for safety reasons.

Is tile on stairs any less safe than tile on floors? I realize that wet tile is slippery but I'm asking about regular tile. I have porcelain tile throughout my house and it's not slippery unless it's wet.

If so, perhaps the OP could tile the stairs (for aesthetics) and then put a stair-rug, covering the center of the stairs, on top of that.

Well, mostly because it probably wouldn't stay.

Stair treads have quite a bit of flex, you'd have to add quite a bit to them to make them stiff enough to hold the tile, then that throws off the rise. How would you finish the nosing?

If the stairs were concrete...

Has nothing to do with getting wet or being slippery, has to do with material hardness if little children or the elderly fall (or clumsy semi-elderly me) - something more likely to happen on stairs than flat floors.

Let me put it this way, I would never buy a house with tiled stairs without an allowance to replace them, unless it was just a killer deal. I doubt I am alone.

I have hardwood floors on my first floor and the the landing and hallway and loft on the 2nd floor also have hardwood. But since my builder didn't offer hardwood stairs, those are carpeted. At first, I thought it would be very weird to have a hardwood-carpet-hardwood look but it turns out that it doesn't really bother me that much. You can get a carpet that kind of blends into whatever color tile you put down and it's not that noticeable. I have thought about getting replacement hardwood treads to match my floors, and I might at some point, but on the other hand, the carpeted stairs are more comfortable to go up and down, and I feel a little safer since there's less likelihood of slipping on the carpet.

There is also a linoleum strip that is wood-grained. Comes in various wood grains and to me looks pretty authentic. One show I watch on tv they use that quite a bit in basements because it is flexible. I've looked at it in the stores and it is really thick durable stuff, not like the old 60's linoleum. Or maybe paint it the same shade as the other floor and put a carpet runner down the middle, tacked down securely. Will you be putting an area rug anywhere? Get a runner to match or with the same colors.
