I had no idea there were 2 in 1 cellular shades. Lowes has shades on sale this week and I need a new cellular shade for the guest bedroom. The sun is on that window in the morning and it needs to be room darkening for sleep and energy savings. I have a light filtering one now. I like light in the room without the shade being open, but room darkening is better for the heat we have, so I resigned myself to getting an up/down opening one so at least the top could be lowered to let light in with some privacy.

Waiting for DH as he was in another department, I was looking at the shade display. A daughter was demo'ing different shades for her elderly father. She was showing her Dad a Levolor cordless that is a room darkening cellular shade all the way down and a sheer cellular when lowered, and can be stopped anywhere in between: a two in one! I was so happy to find a a shade that gives me both and apparently they aren't anything new.

Was there a question in there?

Or was this just the standard SALES pitch that's not needed on this Forum?

I don't care if it was a pitch or not, it's interesting to me, and I didn't know about it. Would love something like that and am going to check it out. Are they completely black when darkened all the way? I'm in Florida and need something for when the sun comes on this side of the condo.

I'm glad you are interested, that's exactly why I posted. No sales pitch and no hidden agenda, just happy to stumble across a product I didn't know exited. I thought there might be others out there that may not be aware of them also. There are other brands that have 2 in 1's also.

I live in FL too, which is why I was so excited to see a product that can do both jobs. They are room darkening. Levolor have room darkening or an energy saver options that confused me until I read up on it. They recommend room darkening in the South for energy savings to keep heat out and the energy saver option in the North to keep heat escaping out the window.

We looked at plantation shutters and I'll start saving for those, we have some but want another set on a large window in the dining room. My kitchen is problematic in that the windows face east and when the sun is fully up, I have to shut vertical blinds that are on the windows, otherwise the kitchen heats up too much and then it's too dark for me. I'm leaning toward roller solar shades that keep the heat and UV out but give a fairly unobstructed view outside. Of course if I can look out, people can see in, so a Roman shade to drop down in the evening may work. I'm still giving this some thought. Finding a balance with sun, comfort and privacy isn't easy.

Closing horizontal blinds the opposite way and just leaving them tilted instead of all the way closed, helps keep the sun out but you don't lose as much 'light'. Don't know if you know that little trick with horizontal blinds.

I am going to have to get blinds for all the windows in our house after it is built. Lord, all those extra expenses you don't think about when building a new house

I thought about plantation shutters.... Not exactly cost effective when doing a whole house LOL. They sure are pretty though!

actually, this is nothing that hasn't been done already.

I have woven roller shades in my bedroom, in the brown family. I like them they look pretty...however, I didn't realize when I bought them, that you can actually see through them. I'm on the 4th floor, so it's not that big a deal, and there is no high building in front of mine.

But, when you need the room to really be dark to sleep, (the sun rises facing my bedroom) I bought blackout roller shades and have them mounted underneath the fancy shades, for when needed.

So in reality I have 2 sets of roller shades on the windows, but when they fancy ones are half way, you would never know.

so this little "trick" (?) , has already been done. It is a good idea though.
